looking after your new canvas

A canvas should last a lifetime with the right care, follow these simple tips to protect your new artwork.

  • Avoid hanging your canvas in direct sunlight. All my paintings are treated with a UV spray varnish, however this will not protect against constant exposure to the suns rays and may cause vibrant colours to fade over time.

  • Don’t use household cleaners to clean your painting . A wipe over with a soft duster or soft dry clean brush also works well a very gentle damp cloth may be used if necessary.

  • Hang your art in a cool and dry location . The stretcher bars on back of the canvas are made from wood, as it’s a natural material it will react to its environment.  Bathrooms, kitchens or any rooms with varying temperatures and heat sources may cause a canvas to expand and contract or even become distorted over time so do be mindful about where you choose hang your new artwork. For example hanging a canvas above a radiator wouldn’t be advised.

  • Storage - avoid stacking multiple paintings against each other, always wrap paintings individually. Use acid free tissue paper or glassine first and then bubble wrap (bubble side out) Try not to lean artwork an angle against a wall for prolonged periods of time and be mindful of the storage environment.
